The Garage at Clinton Row
The Garage at Clinton Row is an adaptive
reuse development in the heart of Downtown
Huntsville. Originally built in 1976, the
existing four-story Clinton Avenue Garage
housed over four hundred cars.

In an effort to complement the new retail development along the Clinton Avenue block, a local developer tasked MGA+I with incorporating additional retail space within the first floor of the parking garage and enhancing the street façade experience with unique and creative design elements. The Shops at Clinton Row were created within fifteen of the first-floor parking spaces along Clinton Avenue. Additional retail areas were divided between the existing garage entrance and built around the existing garage structure.

Along the Clinton Avenue façade, a swag of perforated metal screens were installed between the existing masonry piers. This not only provides a three-dimensional effect and visual obstruction for the parked cars above, but also permits required air flow for an open-air parking deck. In addition, new signage elements with architectural depth were created along Clinton Avenue, while a new marquee sign provides visual identification from several directions.

The creative usage of
materials elevates the
appearance of the building
while concealing the
parked cars.
