Loretto Pool House
This new public pool and adjacent pool
house serve as a source of pride and
positivity for the residents of Loretto, Tennessee.

The Tennessee Office of Sustainable Practices is working with the city to feature the pool as a model for other sustainable construction in the state. The pool features play areas for young children, areas suitable for low-impact water aerobics, and a regulation-length section for swim practice and meets. In lieu of an indoor pool facility, a high-efficiency heater was installed to extend the pool season for the public. MGA+I was tasked with designing the 2,400 square foot pool house, which houses storage rooms, accessible restrooms with showers, a recreation office, a pump area, and a mechanical courtyard.

The project was partially funded through grants provided by the State of Tennessee which allowed sustainable materials and energy conserving systems to be implemented throughout the facility. Durable materials such as concrete, metal, and concrete masonry units were employed for ease of maintenance and longevity. Structural elements, like the glulam wood beams serve as dramatic design features to support the butterfly roof. Natural light pours into the restrooms through skylights while fresh air circulates through openings located at the top of the exterior walls. The facility is not only a beacon of pride for the Loretto Community but also serves as a showcase for the State of Tennessee’s commitment to sustainable design.
